How to Properly Prepare for a Zoom Job Interview

Interviews are a little different these days! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are avoiding face-to-face interactions as much as possible for the health and safety of all involved. This means that if you have an upcoming interview, it may be a Zoom call. So, what can you do to prepare and do the best possible job?

Treat it like any other interview

First and foremost, don’t take a Zoom interview any less seriously than you would an in-person interview. It will determine whether you get hired, so it’s still an important step in the hiring process.

Practice

Research common interview questions and prepare your answers. Practice interviewing with a friend or family member to ensure you have your answers down pat. Hint: if you’re unfamiliar with Zoom calls, set one up to practice your interview questions. This will give you a chance to figure out the best lighting, where to sit, and how to use the Zoom program.

Dress up

Don’t assume that because your interview is over Zoom that it’s more casual than normal. You should still get dressed up just like you would for an in-person interview. The only thing you can probably skip is your shoes.

Minimize distractions

Choose a room in your home that is free from interruptions, including roommates, family members, and pets. It’s understood these days that a child wandering into a Zoom call happens, but try to avoid any situations that will distract you from doing your very best during your interview

Sit near a power source

If you’ll be in front of a desktop computer, this isn’t an issue. But if you’ll be using your laptop, phone or tablet, be sure it’s charged. Just in case, have a charger with you and sit near an outlet in case your battery power starts to run low. Better yet, if you can, keep your device plugged in during your interview

Have water with you

Keep a glass or bottle of water with you in case your mouth gets dry. This is an easy preparation that you’ll be glad you took if you end up needing it.

Take a deep breath and do your best!

By following these tips, you’ll be ready to go come interview day. Good luck—remember to believe in yourself. You can do it!
