If you know where you’re going, it’s much more likely you’ll get there. Some of the most successful people in history achieved great things by simply setting goals for themselves. A goal can be simple or complex, but the main point is that you have an idea of what you’d like to do to map out steps for how to do it.
First, let yourself dream
What do you want from your career? You might want to become certified in a specialty, get promoted, or eventually become a millionaire! No matter what you want from your future, the first step is to identify what it is. Choose 1-5 dreams you want to start working on.
Next, jot down a simple plan
One thing you must understand with goals is that the plan you start with won’t be the plan that will ultimately get you to your goal. It takes recalibration along the way. The most important thing is that you get started. Remember this: you can’t do everything at once, but you can do something at once. So, for each of your dreams, identify a simple plan and a rough idea of when you want it to happen. Be realistic about how long it might take you to reach your goal.
Work on your plan every day
This is also key to accomplishing your goals: you must keep working on them! Once you have a simple plan, start to think about small steps you can take to begin working on it. You don’t need to map out too many since they may change as you learn. Work backward in your mind from the end product you want to accomplish to how you might get started working towards it. Every day, take another small step. Ask questions and read up on the topic. Find a mentor and learn from an expert who has been where you want to go.
Trust that you will be successful
Hope and commitment are what it takes to reach your dreams. Everyone who has ever accomplished anything met roadblocks along the way, but always found a way to overcome them. Believe that you will succeed and keep going. If something doesn’t work, simply recalibrate and keep moving forward.
