If you have an end goal in sight, you can begin with the right entry-level job to steer your job course in the right direction. Your first decision should be which branch of insurance you’re interested in. This includes life, health and financial, social, and property and casualty. Entry-level positions include brokers, underwriters, loss adjusters, risk managers, claims investigators, loss control specialists, actuaries, marketing representatives, and appraisers.
- Do your research. You can learn about insurance companies by visiting their website or social media pages. You can read their about section, press releases or company announcements, and check to see if they’re currently hiring. Research can also help you decide what type of job you’d like within the insurance industry.
- Map your current skills. If you’re already in the working world and have built up some job skills, you should think about how these could transition to an insurance position. By researching the types of insurance careers and entry-level positions, you might want to try, review job descriptions to see what skills these individuals need to qualify. Which skills match those you currently possess? Continuing this same line of thought, what skills do you need to develop? You might be able to do some reading online, take a course, or even try a volunteer opportunity that could help you develop your job-related skills.
- Connect with insurance professionals. Another great way to learn about the industry or find out about potential job openings is by networking. You can find contacts on LinkedIn or by attending job fairs where insurance companies will be present. Introduce yourself, get to know them, and ask questions about their company, position, or the insurance industry in general.
