After all, your job is how you spend many of your waking hours, so you want to choose the one you like. If you’re just getting started in the working world, or you’re looking for a career change, the insurance industry is a good choice.
What factors are you considering in your decision? Some worry about career longevity—how will the industry hold up, and will you be able to continue in your career long into the future? Others wonder about profitability—what is the earning potential? And still, others want to make a difference in the world-changing lives is a meaningful goal.
Reasons to become an insurance professional
The good news is the insurance industry checks many boxes! Consider the following four reasons to enter this booming field:
- It’s growing. Insurance has been around for a long time and will continue to be around as long as life presents risks. Even as our culture changes, technology evolves, and our values shift, we still have important things we need to protect, such as our health, our finances, and our property. This isn’t a concept that will fade away anytime soon. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts job opportunities to increase 10 percent from 2018–2028.
- You can help people. The central theme of the insurance industry is helping its members through peace of mind. Your job will help either directly (for example, a customer service agent who speaks directly to members and offers information and support) or indirectly (like a salesperson who helps employers or individuals purchase insurance plans). If your goal is to make the world a better (and safer!) place, the insurance industry is a great choice!
- There are many ways to stay engaged. You can choose from a variety of positions and many fields within the insurance industry! Titles such as actuary, claims adjuster, claims examiner, and insurance investigator are just a few, with openings for customer service, underwriting, sales, marketing, PR, advertising, and more. This is a great way to stay motivated, advance in your career, and increase your earning potential, all while never getting bored!
- You have the opportunity to keep learning. The insurance industry is always changing. Rules and regulations change, products are created, focus shifts, etc. The insurance industry is ever-changing, and to you, this means the opportunity (and in some cases the requirement) to keep learning to keep up. You won’t stagnate, and you’ll give yourself the chance to learn and develop new skills.
