During an interview, you’re probably spending a lot of time trying to keep yourself calm and answer all the questions to the best of your ability. You’re also trying to make a connection with the person interviewing you and do an overall good job.

Once the interview is over and you’re a bit calmer, you may find yourself asking, “How did that go?” The time spent waiting after your interview to hear back can be a little trying, especially if you’re unsure how successful your performance was. And if it went well and you haven’t heard back yet, you’ll want to follow up. So how can you know?

Important clues you had a good interview

An interview is a little bit like a first date. In other words, if it went well, you’ll know. It helps to use your intuition alongside these key signs:

The interview went longer than it was scheduled. Have you ever noticed how time flies when you’re having a good conversation? If an interviewer likes you and thinks you’re a good match for the job, they’ll have plenty to talk to you about and vice versa. If you clicked and got along really well, this also helps enable an easy and long conversation. If you found yourself checking your watch at the end of the interview and noticed you were chatting longer than you expected, it’s a sign that things went well.

The conversation felt natural. Everyone feels some jitters during an interview, especially when you want the job. But did you reach a point during the conversation that you just felt completely comfortable and at ease? Almost like you were no longer nervous and were chatting with the interviewer? Another good indication of this is positive body language from the person who interviewed you: in other words, they were nodding, smiling, leaning forward, adding to and expanding on your comments, and overall in sync with the conversation… things that happen when you’re having a chat with a friend. If you leave the interview feeling like you actually kind of enjoyed yourself, that’s also a good sign.

They wanted to learn more. At the end of a good interview, the interviewer may ask you some important follow-up questions. Any questions that indicate they’re interested in continuing a conversation with you are good signs. These could include:

When are you free for a follow-up interview?

Is there anything else we can answer for you about the job?

Would you be open to speaking to [name] from our team?

Check-in with the interviewer

If you don’t hear back within two weeks, it’s acceptable to check in with the interviewer and inquire if the job has been filled yet. Just a simple email will do.

In search of your next job? Check out InsuranceRecruiters.com!

If you don’t get hired, don’t worry.
