AVP/Director, Inland Marine - New York, NY

 

Job Summary:

Responsible for the planned profitability, growth and retention of commercial inland marine business within the wholesale distribution arena. Nationwide subject matter expert in MGA business development and on-going management. Responsible for contributions to the nationwide business plan as per assignment(s).

Essential Job Functions:

Produce new business and renew existing portfolio once established in accordance with plan. Achieve loss ratio plan by determining acceptability of risk based on underwriting guidelines and sound judgment.
Apply leadership skills with co-workers, fostering a teaming approach. Work within established work-flows to meet region time service goals.
Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with wholesalers, clients and any other external distribution channels, especially MGAs. Utilize effective sales and negotiation skills to obtain and retain accounts on the most profitable terms possible.
Work closely with other internal departments such as operations, loss control, claims, marketing, audit and accounting to meet client service goals and increase knowledge on your accounts.
Follow company and regional underwriting guidelines to ensure the profitability and efficiency of your book of business.
Make use of current company technology to process work. Update skills as necessary, including but not limited to Excel programs and PowerPoint.
Responsible for complying with proper internal controls as necessary to conduct job functions and/or carry out responsibilities and/or administrative activities at Company.
Act as a nationwide subject matter expert (SME) on the wholesale distribution model and MGA utilization.
Stay current on industry trends within assigned lines of coverage and share this information with the team.
Prepare reports and participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned by management.
Be engaged in industry associations to promote company visibility and expertise.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree Preferred

- Minimum of 10 years of commercial underwriting experience or equivalent

- Familiarity with MS Office Suite

- Strong oral and written communication skills

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Industry designations preferred

- Prior knowledge of and experience with the wholesale distribution channel who specialize in being aggregators rather than predominantly E&S inland marine brokers.
